Glitter liner has a reputation for being fussy: it flakes, it migrates under the eye, it looks like a craft project. Almost all of that comes down to when in your routine you apply it, not the product itself. Here is how to wear it properly, plus five looks that take under five minutes.
The one rule that fixes everything
Apply glitter liner last, and let it dry completely before you blink hard, look down, or apply anything else. Glitter liner is suspended in a liquid base. That base needs 30 to 60 seconds to set. Most fallout happens because people blink into wet liner or apply mascara afterwards and knock it loose.
Second rule: apply it over a matte base, not over an oily lid. Setting powder on the lid first gives the glitter something to grip.
Look 1: The inner-corner pop
The easiest entry point. Dab a small amount of a light shade, silver white or a soft gold, into the inner corner of each eye. That is the entire look. It brightens tired eyes instantly and takes about 20 seconds.
Look 2: Glitter over black
Do your normal black liner and let it dry. Then trace glitter liner along the top of it, staying slightly thinner than the black underneath so a dark edge still shows. You get definition from the black and sparkle on top, and the black line hides any wobble.
Look 3: The half-line
Apply glitter liner only on the outer half of the lid, from the middle of your eye out to the wing. This is much more forgiving than a full line because the tricky inner section is left bare, and it still elongates the eye.
Look 4: Lower lash line only
Skip the top entirely. Run a thin glitter line along your lower lash line, focusing on the outer third. Pair with plain mascara on top. It reads as intentional and modern, and it is nearly impossible to mess up.
Look 5: The floating graphic line
The advanced one, but still beginner-achievable. With your eye open, draw a glitter line above your natural crease, following its curve. Because the line sits above the crease, it stays visible when your eye is open. Keep it thin and let it dry completely before blinking.
Choosing your first shade
If you are buying one, go with gold or silver white. Both flatter every skin tone and work for daytime as well as going out. Coloured shades like green, sky blue, or rose red are brilliant, but they are easier to wear once you are comfortable with placement.
Removing glitter liner without the mess
Do not scrub. Press a cotton pad soaked in micellar water or an oil-based cleanser against your closed eye and hold for 20 seconds. Let the product dissolve the base, then wipe in one direction. Scrubbing scatters glitter across your face and irritates the eye area.
A safety note
Only ever use eyeliner formulated for use around the eyes, and never apply it to the waterline unless the product specifically states it is safe there. If you experience irritation, stinging, or redness, remove it and stop using the product.
